Irrigation systems supplied by domestic or private potable water systems are considered to be a potential pollution hazard to the water supply. These systems must include protection to prevent possible backflow of irrigation water into the potable water supply.
Federal law requires a proper backflow device to be installed on any watering system to prevent contamination of the supply; whether it be pump or city water. Check your local water authority for installation requirements & codes. In many rural areas; specific requirements for landscape irrigation systems may not be covered in local plumbing codes and/or enforcement may be limited. HOWEVER...limitation in local authority does not alter the basic requirement for protection of the potable water supply.
The Febco FE850 DCA backflow preventers are designed to protect against pollutants entering into the potable water supply. These devices feature a bronze body and threaded ball valve connections. The maximum pressure for this product is 175 PSI. This product can be used for irrigation systems, fire sprinkler systems, in-plant commercial, and industrial plumbing. The double-check assemblies are not approved for backflow prevention against toxic substances including liquids, solids, or gases.
The double check assembly consists of two spring-loaded check valves and shut-off valves on the inlet and discharges side of the check valves and small test cocks. The valve body consists of durable bronze material. The elastomers are made up of a strong silicone material while the spring is stainless steel. Install a rectangular irrigation box in accordance with local code. Dig a hole and fill it with enough drain rock to provide a flat surface 18″ below grade. Cover the rock with landscaping mesh before setting the rectangular valve box in place. Hold in place by packing soil on two sides away from the inlet and outlet holes. Cut inlet and outlet holes in the valve box as needed. Dry fit the assembly, unions, hose bib tee, and all connecting pipe. Measure the interior length of the valve box between the inlet and outlet holes. Subtract the assembly length from the interior length and divide the result in half. This is the distance from the interior upstream side of the valve box to the first fitting.
Each double-check valve assembly comes with explicit instructions for maintenance and repair. Rubber components check modules, and seals can be replaced by a mechanically competent homeowner or plumber (if allowed by local code). Many jurisdictions require that any time the access cover is opened for any reason or the assembly is disconnected from the system, it must be tested by a state-certified backflow assembly inspector before being put back into service.
To winterize an underground DCVA, the isolation valves must first be closed. Then the lines need to be blown out. Finally, open all of the valves on the device halfway and clean out any debris from the valve box. If the valve is installed above ground, Sprinkler Warehouse recommends the use of an insulation backflow bag to cover the device and protect the backflow from possible extreme cold.
The DCA is the most common type of approved backflow prevention device for use in underground or in-line installations. In-line (or below-grade) simply means that the backflow device is parallel with the piping of the sprinkler system; unlike the PVB, the DCA does not have to be installed 12 inches above the highest point in the system. Some areas do require above-ground installation, so check with local authorities before installing below ground.
