Product Details

Installing The PGP Riser Seal

  • Removing the old seal:
    • Unscrew the body cap and remove the internal assembly.
    • Place the base of the riser on a solid surface and grip the spring and riser body firmly.
    • With your other hand, snap off the body cap. With your palm on top of the logo cap, pull up with your fingers.
    • While still gripping the spring and body, remove the rubber seal. When you remove the seal, the tension in the spring will be released.
    • Remove the plastic spring seat.
  • Installing the new seal:
    • With the base of the riser on a solid surface, push the retraction spring down below the nozzle turret and hold it there.
    • Drop the rigid-plastic spring seat onto the riser, grooved side down, so it rests on the spring.
    • Carefully work the new flexible rubber seal, flat side up, onto the nozzle turret, and then down onto the riser body. Take special care not to twist or deform the flexible seal as you work it down over the gap between nozzle turret and riser shaft.
    • Snap the body cap onto the body. The cap will slide down freely once past the ring at the top of the nozzle turret.
    • Carefully release your grip on the spring.
    • Exercise the assembly several times (push the cap down and let it be pushed back up) to ensure the parts are seated and do not stick.
    • Reinstall the assembly in the sprinkler body, screwing the cap on tightly with your hand. Be sure no threads can be felt under the body cap—if you can feel the threads, the seal is not seated properly.

Note: The new riser seal incorporates improvements that increase the durability and life of service.

Before turning on the sprinkler to check for leaks, necessary adjustments and proper retraction, you should check the final installation height to determine if the sprinkler is set at grade.

Replacing the Riser Seal on a Hunter Rotor
Steps 1 Steps 2

Unthread the body cap and remove the internal assembly from the pop-up body.

Place the base of the riser on a solid surface and grip the spring and riser body firmly. With the other hand, snap off the body cap—with your palm on top of the logo cap, pull up with your fingers.

Steps 3 Steps 4

While still gripping the spring and body, remove the rubber seal.

When you remove the seal, the spring's tension will be released. Remove the plastic spring and plastic springseat (if it was not pushed off by the spring).

Steps 5

Now that the old seal is removed, the new seal can slide over the top of the rotor's turret and onto the riser. Be sure to install the spring seat prior to the riser seal. After the new components are installed you can then reinstall the rotors body cap.

Stopped the leaking
Half of the sprinklers in my yard were leaking a large pool of water around where they popped up due to the worn out riser stem seals, This would have cost me a bunch but I googled the brand, found a video on how to repair them and found sprinkler warehouse, ordered a dozen of the seals and all is good now. This was easy to do and saved me over 200.00, which was the estimate for fixing 10 pop up sprinkler heads! Thanks for the easy experience of shopping with you. Jake

This will work well on a newer leaking head. My head was 12 years old and the riser was worn. New seal did not work.

Great repair option
Fixed my leaking sprinkler heads beautifully. I was honestly a bit surprised they worked as well as they did. Saved me having to replace several heads, and saved quite a bit of money in the long run.

Good product, great price, shipping cost is a little high
Good product, great product, shipping cost is a little high. I was charged $5.99 shipping for a product that could probably be send via USPS for about $2.

does the Hunter 181500 PGP Riser Seal

Why can't I get the Hunter PGP riser seal?
A shopper on May 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You can. The part number is 181500. Do not get it confused with the spring seat which is a very similar item that sits on top of the spring and gives a flat surface for the seal to sit on top of. The seal is not a rubber gasket but rather a soft plastic seal with a ridge that faces downward. I would suggest looking up a video on repairing your brand and model. There are many great ones to view that should clear up any confusion.
I would like to purchase Hunter part no. 253400 For PGP seal replacement kit. Do you have this item?
John M on Apr 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I am not an expert but this is what I found out. The 253400 kit is a two part item that included a spring seat that rides on top of the large spring for the seal to sit on top of. Because the spring seat does not wear out most companies are selling only the seal part # 181500 by itself. If you dissemble one of your sprinklers you will find both of them and only replace the top part. I would suggest searching for a repair video of your sprinkler first. There are many. Good luck.
need riser seals for hunter i20?
Robert J on Mar 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Make sure your riser is not worn down and is not chipped or cracked at the top. The riser needs to be in good shape. If the head is older just replace.
How do I install the riser seal?
Gary L on Apr 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: it's pretty easy once you have done it once, if you've got an old head you can practice on that one, You unscrew the top cap from the body and remove from the body. the riser appears to be fixed in the top cap but it can be removed by gently but forcefully pushed down threw the cap (the opposite way that it normally rises) with the palm of your hand. a block of wood and a hammer might be needed for the tougher ones. remove the spring remove the spring seat and you should be at the seal. to reassemble just reverse the procedure.
if there is sand or debris, rinse it off before reassembly. don't for get to check for debris in the body piece you left in the ground.
If the riser is severely scored from debris, you might want to think about replacing the head.
My sprinkler heads indicate "G" series. My seal is 2" OD. Is this the correct seal for my Hunter sprinkler?
Rick B on Mar 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't remember mine saying G series, the seals worked great and it was much cheaper than replacing all units. I have sandy soil so they take a beating. You could go onto Hunters site to check however prices are much higher if you buy from them.
My hunter head shows PGM and want to know if there is a riser seal that will fit?
Steven B on Jun 6, 2019
KENNY M on May 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I think it is just one.

Kit # 253400 includes both a rigid plastic spring seat and the flexible rubber seal and installation instructions.

181500 is just the flexible rubber seal.

Hope this helps.
I can't get the key hex head into the distance adjustment screw. Might be filled with dirt or just may need a new PGP. Fix?
Andy P on Jun 3, 2020
BEST ANSWER: They get very dirty with time. Raise the head , use the 12-3200 nozzle insertion collar to get it up to work on. Gently pry off the rubber cover. If it breaks, replace it (PN 269400). Use a fine wire to clean out the hex hollow. Check for wrench fit. Replace rubber cap and remove insertion collar. Consider nozzle sets as way to adjust distance and spread as well.
is the part number for the hunter riser seal 181500 sp the same as part number 253400?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No the 181500 is a part number for the seal only. The 253400 is for the seal plus the spring seat which is a similar looking part but is meant to sit on top of the spring and give a flat surface for the seal to sit on top of. In most cases the seal is the only item that needs replacement.
The Hunter units I have appear to be identical to Orbit Voyager, are the seals the same? Will these work for Orbit Voyager sprinkler heads as well?
Roger G on Mar 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have found they are identical. I have used parts from the orbit voyager to repair the hunter brand.
