Febco PVB Bonnet/Poppet Kit 1" - 1-1/4"

The Febco FE905-212 is the replacement bonnet and poppet kit for Febco 1 - 1-1/4 inch pressure vacuum breaker assemblies.

  • Febco Bonnet & Poppet Kit
  • Fits a 1 inch to 1.25 inch Febco Pressure Vacuum Breaker

Features & Benefits

FEBCO is so confident of the heavy-duty construction and "freeze plug" design of the Series 765, it is the only manufacturer to offer a lifetime warranty on the bronze valve body of the 1⁄2" through 11⁄4" models*. In most pressure vacuum breaker designs, the bronze body can split open when water inside expands in freezing temperatures. When this happens, the whole unit must be replaced which can be expensive and downright inconvenient. But should an unexpected freeze catch your irrigation system.

Series 765 Pressure Vacuum Breaker Features: Only FEBCO offers a Lifetime Warranty on the bronze body of the 1⁄2" through 11⁄4" Series 765.

The exclusive "freeze plug" design feature of the 1⁄2" through 11⁄4" models prevents freeze damage to the bronze body and limits damage to less expensive internal components. Unique check valve design reduces check valve fouling and chattering providing longer life and more reliable operation.

Vandal/tamper resistant brass canopy and test cocks mean trouble-free performance. Engineered plastic and brass internal parts resist chemical and mineral deposit build-up for more reliable performance. Heavy duty engineered plastic poppets provide reliable operation.

Here are Two Ways to Determine the Size Kit You Need:

  1. Measure across the bottom of the Poppet (item 12 in picture above); the distance across the bottom of the Poppet will determine which size kit you need:
    • 1/2" & 3/4" Kits: Poppet measures 1- 1/8" to 1- 3/16" across the bottom (diameter).
    • 1" & 1-1/4" Kits: Poppet measures 1- 7/8" across the bottom (diameter).
    • 1-1/2" & 2" Kits: Poppet measures 3- 7/16" across the bottom (diameter).
  2. Measure across the bottom of the Bonnet Assembly; the distance across the bottom of the Bonnet Assembly (threaded part) will determine which size kit you need:
    • 1/2" & 3/4" Kits: Bonnet Assembly measures 1- 5/16" across the bottom (diameter).
    • 1" & 1-1/4" Kits: Bonnet Assembly measures 2- 3/16" across the bottom (diameter).
    • 1-1/2" & 2" Kits: Bonnet Assembly is made of brass and measures 5- 1/8" across the bottom (diameter).

90% of the Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB) installed for a typical residential home are 1" PVB's

How to Replace the Bonnet and Poppet (you should always change both):

  1. Turn off the water supply (Warning: Failure to Assure the Water Pressure is Relieved can cause Harm!)
  2. Close water supply side ball valve first
  3. Go to the sprinkler controller and manually start each zone or section valve by manually starting the sprinkler system. This will relieve the water pressure in the PVB. Then turn off the manual operation of the sprinkler system.
  4. Close second ball valve (on outlet side of PVB)
  5. Make sure that you have relieved water pressure by opening test cocks on side of PVB
  6. Place large O-Ring (included in kit) around Bonnet
  7. Apply lubricant (included in kit) to gasket
  8. Fit (slide it onto) Poppet on brass guide stem of Bonnet
  9. Thread Bonnet into PVB unit (hand tight only)
  10. Replace Canopy and tighten nut on top of canopy using a wrench
  11. Turn on the water supply
  12. Open water supply side ball valve first and rapidly
  13. Open second ball valve

Kit 905-211: includes the Bonnet and Poppet Assemblies for both 1/2" and 3/4" Pressure Vacuum Breakers

905-212: includes the Bonnet and Poppet Assemblies for both 1" and 1 1/4" Pressure Vacuum Breakers

I have a very old system (1989) has a brass pressure vacuum breaker as in the picture. Started leaking. Is there a cap with the same thread that can be used instead of replacing the bonnet? Our irrigation guy said we don't really need the breaker and could just cap it.
Handygal on Jun 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Thanks ... I agree .. must have been there for a reason. He wanted to dig up my interlocking brick patio to replace the whole unit ... I think I s.b. able to replace just the poppet. If not .. I can get at the breaker w/o digging up very much. Thanks again.
I am considering purchasing this repair kit. Is the quality of this kit as good as all the reviews say it is? How does this kit compare to similar repair kits for the Febco backflow unti?
Darrel M on Feb 9, 2011
BEST ANSWER: I bought the kit as a replacement for one that had frozen and broken. The kit fit great and works like new. I have had no problems with it whatsover. I was quoted $110 for the kit locally. I have added Sprinkler Warehouse to my Favorites for any parts I need.
Is this part OEM, or an aftermarket part?
Eric C on Jan 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's been a while and I can't recall if it's an aftermarket or an OEM unit. That being said - I don't think it matters - it was simple to install and it works just fine. Sprinkler Warehouse is a quality supplier and I don't think they would provide a sun-standard component.
is the 1 in the model number 765-1 for a 1" inlet?
DIYMan on Jul 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it is for a 1" inlet. I installed this on my system and it is all 1" piping.
Is the Febco 765-1" Bonnet/Poppet kit, manufactured by Febco or an aftermarket manufacture?
tboo on Apr 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The one I got said Febco on it. However, I found out, after the fact, that SW sells an alternative they they think is better built. I highly recommend looking at the video on the website with regard to installation.
this kit , do i need any more gasket s or part ? i need to get the job done ! to complete all

BEST ANSWER: Everything you need is right there. Don't you find it somewhat disturbing that the company that is selling you this product isn't able to answer your question? I guess this is the next step after self check out. Completely self serve.
Can this part going bad cause the unit to make a vibrating sound when it starts up and changes stations?
Leo D on Jul 7, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Actual vibrating... or sound? I am not a plumber, but a handy do-it-yourselfer... What you describe does not make sense to me as this valve should be under constant pressure (thus closed) whenever your system is up (thus switching sprinkler stations in a pressurized system shouldn't effect the valve) . It sounds like your system may have altering pressure (there will be altering pressure that is normal as the station opens and releases the water to the sprinklers), or even air in the system?, or something needs to be strapped down? You may want to get a plumber involved because rattling and shaking pipes could eventually work into a burst or leak issue... some wining noises in the pipes may be a non-issue, but make sure the pipes are not shaking or vibrating (this will lead to problems...).
My sprinkler backflow valve popped off this past weekend. I wanted to know if the kits are universal kits for all brands?
A shopper on Jan 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have a Febco and and ordered parts on two occasions. The kits I've purchased were easy to install and are working well. However, I did copy the model of the back flow valve (listed on the side of the value) and used it when I order parts. If you can't fine the model name/number I suggest taking a picture of it and comparing it with those shown online. And Sprinkler Warehouse makes this easy.
Does this require any special tools to unscrew and replace the bonnet and popper kit?
Woody C on Nov 7, 2011
BEST ANSWER: If you are replacing the bonnet, you don't have to worry about breaking anything. Depending on what is left on top, you may just be able to lay a screw driver across the top to provide leverage. Unscrew in a counter clockwise direction. A wrench or pipe wrench can work just as well. The poppet just comes right out.
Follow the directions to put the new assembly together. Make sure you use the grase on your "O" ring. I believe they have you hand tighten the assembly. If you over tighten, you'll crack it and be starting over again.
Hope this helps.
How do you know what size to replace?
A shopper on Aug 10, 2011
BEST ANSWER: I would get the model number of fthe vacuum valve and look it up to see what size it is. If it is a 1" valve you need a one inch kit. More than likely you need a 1" kit.
What is the life expectantcy of these replacement kits?
A shopper on Aug 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We occasionally wil find that the rubber seals of the assembly allow water to leak and drip on the ground. If we have a leak that allows water to leak into the underground tubing we could find the tubing split in the spring when we start up that system and zone. We have had very few instances of tubing splitting over many years. In general we consider life expectancy to be indefinitely long. We keep a stock of bonnet and poppet replacement pars and complete anti-backflow units as a precaution but we would estimate that we repair only one or two in any given year. We consider the replacement parts to be just as good as original eqpt parts. Good luck
Hi, I have a FEBCO backflow preventer stamped "765" the internals went bad and I removed them, with a plan to replace but now I'm confused about which to get. Unfortunately, I was stupid and tossed the broken parts - but the place they were screwed into measuers about 1 inch and 3/8. So which do I order or is there some other bit of info I can provide to help?
Jimbo on May 7, 2013
BEST ANSWER: If this is residential they are almost always a 765-100. I have changed a couple for some of myself and my neighbors. Check your stamp for the 100 after the 765. If you find the 100 then the 905-212 is the original manufacturer replacement part. There is also another alternative, YELLOWJACKET-100 1 inch Backflow Repair Kit for Febco 765-100, which you can find on the Sprinkler Warehouse website.
how do you take off the broken valve. to put the new one on.?
Dianna S on Apr 4, 2011
BEST ANSWER: To remove the assembly, you can use a long-handled screwdriver between the plastic 'posts' that stick up. Simply run it horizontally, left to right, behind the post on the left and in front of the one to the right. Rotate the assembly counter-clockwise to loosen it. You can then unscrew it by hand.

Be sure to remove any broken pieces from the backflow device prior to installing the new one and follow all the instructions provided. HTH,
I need a replacement bonnet for Febco 765 PVB . Do you have this?
Matt D on Oct 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes I have this and find it very reliable.
can you get just the gasket kit, my popit seems fine but the gasket is leaking, is there a metal version of this my metal one lasted 15 years since we switched to the plastic ones I've been replacinging these things at least every 2 years?
A shopper on Sep 11, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Not to my knowledge, I first tried FW Webb and you had to buy the poppet and bonnet parts together. Sprinkler Warehouse had a cheaper price and faster delivery time.
Hi, I have a Rain Bird pressure vacuum breaker (PVB 100) that froze and broke down last winter. Since Rain Bird has stopped manufacturing this, I need to look out for a replacement, and found that Febco's bonnet repair kit seems a good replacement. Would anyone know if this replacement would work?
Sharath P on Jul 15, 2013
BEST ANSWER: not sure about a rain bird, but the best thing to do is to take it out for the winter, its easy to do and solves the problem.
does the febco 905-212 repplace the febco febco 765-1?
A shopper on Apr 3, 2012
BEST ANSWER: According to information pulled from the Febco Website, the 905-212 poppet and bonnet kit fits both the 765-1 and the 765-1 1/4. The kit is the same part number for both devices.

Hope it helps.
Does this repair kit include a new Check Assembly as well?
Adam J on Apr 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Nope - it might be more cost effective to buy an open box pressure vacuum breaker and harvest the parts you need.
