Installation, operation, and maintenance are designed to be simple while still delivering optimal efficiency and reliability

Features & Benefits

WaterSense Smart Watering Controller By Adding Solar Sync

By adding a Solar Sync to your Hunter controller, it transforms into a smart controller using local weather conditions to tailor watering schedules to actual conditions on the site. A Hunter controller with Solar Sync has been independently proven to have a detailed list of water-saving features and has been approved by the EPA as a WaterSense Smart Watering Controller.

Easy Retrieve Memory

A manual back-up utility that stores complete controller scheduling and setup information in back-up memory. This allows the saved watering schedule to be restored at any time. This can be used to set a controller back to its initial settings after tampering or at the beginning of a new season.

Programmable Rain Delay

The Programmable Rain Delay feature incorporates a user-specified number of days to keep the controller in the OFF mode, then allows for the system to automatically revert back to scheduled irrigation. This will prevent watering during an extended period of inclement weather, but will resume watering automatically without requiring a return visit to the controller. The controller displays the number of days remaining before watering resumes.

Quick Check

The QuickCheck feature makes field wiring issues easy to assess with the push of a button. QuickCheck displays an ERR message when a field wiring short is detected on a particular station number.

Non-Volatile Memory

This feature offers protection against unreliable power, retaining current time, date, and program data.

Automatic Short Circuit Protection

Automatic short circuit protection is a feature found in all Hunter AC powered controllers. This feature automatically detects electrical faults, which are typically caused by wiring issues. Only affected stations are skipped, allowing all other stations to water normally as programmed. There are no fuses to blow or internal circuit breakers to trip, so complete irrigation system shutdown is avoided.

Seasonal Adjustment: Global or Automatic Updates with Solar Sync

This feature allows for quick adjustments to irrigation run times through a percentage scale. During peak season, set the seasonal adjustment to 100%. If weather conditions require less water, enter the appropriate percentage value (i.e. 50%) to cut down irrigation run times without the need to adjust each station in the program. This model offers two different ways to use Seasonal Adjustment to reduce water usage: Global and Daily.

Global: The Global option provides a Seasonal Adjustment percentage to all station Run Times on all of the controller's Programs.

Daily: With the addition of a Solar Sync ET Sensor, the controller has the ability to automatically implement daily adjustments based on measured local weather.

Delay Between Stations

Users can program a delay between stations as the controller advances from one station to the next. This delay can range from a few seconds (to permit slow-closing valves additional time to close) to a much longer period of time (to allow pressure tanks time to recharge), based on user requirements.

Sensor Programmability

The ability to specify which program will be shut down in response to a specific sensor alarm. This allows programs unaffected by the sensor to continue automatic operations.

I would recommend this product.
The 400I X-Core was a replacement for 10 year Hunter SRC model. The installation was a simple swap out. It about an hour to install and get the unit programmed. I especially like the new Cycle and Soak feature and can't wait to test it out. A great product, good price and excellent customer service.

because my old rainbird is acting up. it is 16 years old. maybe its time to replace it or maybe not. my research tells me the hunter is slightly better than the rainbird my motor start valve is chattering on start-up, hunter psr-22, am told this is because of low voltage. I suspect the controller hence the replacement

I have tried $%&#bird products prior to using the Hunters products. the other control was okay but the electric valves were unreliable. The Hunter products work very well, the controllers have backup for power outage and they are pretty easy to program if you pay attention.

What is the sensor bypass switch for? Should it be set on active?
Rhonda M on Jun 17, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The "Weather Sensor" is an optional item that can be purchased. It is not included with the controller kit. If installed, the Weather Sensor" senses weather conditions. If rain is detected, the Weather Sensor will initiate a shut down of irrigation operations.

The "Active/Bypass" switch on the controller provides a simple means to bypass the Weather Sensor capability when the sensor is not installed. I live in a desert climate with infrequent light rainfall. Therefore I do not have the Weather Sensor, as it is readily convenient for me to shut down the system manually when rain does occur.

The Owner's Manual on page 16 describes the optional Weather Sensor, including a wiring alternative to bypass the Weather Sensor circuit if the sensor is not installed.
Does x-core timers have all station function, so it will run sequentially?
A shopper on Jul 31, 2014
BEST ANSWER: If I understand the question correctly the answer is Yes. Only 1 zone operates at a time and starting with zone 1 the controller will sequence through all zones with a run time greater than zero.
Does the 400i timer inclulde the 24v transformer with it that is shown on the display pic on this website?
Dyane on Nov 16, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Yes everything you will need to run four or fewer valves is included. It is very user friendly and easy to program.
My X-Core is inside the garage, so it is protected from the elements, but it is hard wired. So is this considered an inside or outside unit?
Tanny on Sep 2, 2014
BEST ANSWER: If it is away from the weather, it is considered an inside unit. Outside units are generally contained in a protective cabinet of some sort. Ultimately the electronics just have to stay dry, inside or out. Glad to be of assistance.
I assume it does not come with the wall plug transformer to make it work?
john L on Jul 7, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it comes with a transformer -- a grounded "Class 2 Power Unit" -- that plugs into the wall, and that you wire to the Timer unit. No further purchase is required to make the timer work.
My Hunter X-Core was a replacement for an older Hunter. We have 6 zones. Are zones the same as stations?
Tanny on Sep 2, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Areas/stations/zones are all the same. SO you can program up to 8 different or separate areas with this model.
Does this controller come with manual?

BEST ANSWER: Yes this does come with a manual. As a matter of fact this unit had one more zone control that I needed for my system.
I have an old Hunter SRC Plus that needs to be replaced. Is this the best replacement option?
Ashley K on May 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Just this spring (March 2019) I replaced a Hunter SRC with the XC400i. I don't know if this is the best option? But in my own experience, it was an easy install and worked out great. The power cube is a tad bit bigger than the SRC. Also the XC400 has a coin type battery backup, I don't know how long that might last? I replaced the SRC 9 volt battery every spring. I'll probably do the same again.
If I'm using this controller to replace a controller that no longer works, can I simply connect the current wires from the stations to this or does the entire system need to be re-wired?
A shopper on Mar 7, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Hi Yes, you would have to completly remove remove the old unit, then its a case of simply connecting the valve wires and common wire to the new unit. You will also have to plug inthe new transfomer and reconect the 24v AC to the unit.

It s very easy and you wil be pleased with the Hunter Unit
can i use the xc hunter series 4 station controller (indoor) within 6 ft. of the pump start relay ?? (the dealer I bought from says yes, but the directions in the box says no) ---What say you ???? Thank you....
Barney K on Jun 8, 2011
BEST ANSWER: I am not sure since i am not sure what a pump start relay is. However, if you need to get something for a sprinkler system i would recommend Sprinkler Warehouse. Their prices are great and they are helpful if called for advice.
how to turn off zone 2?
A shopper on Oct 16, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I can think of two ways to do this without consulting the manual. If you are there when the system goes from zone 1 to zone 2 then just hit the right arrow button to skip to the next zone. If there are only two zones you could simply turn the dial to off after zone 1. Or, one more option is to program your automated run times. Set zone 2 to zero run time and it will skip it. If the system does not shut off after the set run time you may need a new station. I had an older hunter xc-400 and it would not shut off after the run times, instead it just started over at zone 1. The lightning or a power surge of some kind literally burned the circuit board on the station as well as a transformer on my AC unit. I replaced it with the new xc-400i and have had no problems. Hope this helps
Why does the transformer have three wires coming out of it, but calls only for two on the terminals?
john L on Jul 7, 2013
BEST ANSWER: 2 wires are for 24v AC current and one for ground.
I have programed this to start at 0500. The clock is set with a 24 hr mode, so I know what time it is. However besides the 0500 start time, this controller starts watering at midnight and goes through every cycle programed into it. The result is a thoroughly soaked yard. I have reset and programmed this timer at least 6 times, but it still turns on at midnight. I have watched the utube videos and have gleamed nothing that tells me how to get it to start at the time that I have programmed. What am I doing wrong? Or is the timer defective. Also, if I have the timer in off mode on the station program-why does it start and cycle? I'm ready to trade it in if it doesn't stop cycling at midnight. Thanks for info on programing this timer.
Suzy O on Jul 1, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I have been able to set up programs and times schedules without issue. In your notes you mention the timer/sprinkler goes off even if it is turned to off. I would say something is not working with the controller
We have lost the instructions. Can you help please?
A shopper on Jan 2, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Follow this link to Sprinklerwarehouse to find the manuals for many of the Hunter's controllers. You may need to cut and paste to your url as it does not appear to be a standard direct link.

This would have been faster coming from the Customer Service department!
If you have two zones set for the same hour why do they come on one at a time?
Villain on Oct 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Sprinklers work off water pressure and that’s why you have to split into zones in the first place. You can only have so many zones on one setting so that the pressure is high enough to work each sprinkler properly. You can only run one zone at a time. *helpful tip: if you set the times for the wee hours of the morning, pressure is the highest and best due to less usage.

Can you add zones to the 400i?
A shopper on May 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No...the Hunter XC-400i is a 4-station fixed controller and is not expandable to more than 4-stations. It controls up to four stations plus a master valve. Hunter X-Core fixed (non-expandable) models are available in 2, 4, 6 or 8-stations.
how to add a fifth station?
Leslie M on Dec 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Buy a XC-600 6 station. These are fixed station timers and are not modular.
I'm looking to replace a old Hunter SRC 400I controller. This appears to be compatible replacement unit. Will need to replace the existing SRC transformer to work with this new unit?
Bill on Sep 14, 2013
BEST ANSWER: No. The transformer is simply a step down from house current 120v ac to 27 volt ac current. As long as the transformer is functioning, it can be used with any common 27v timer.
what is the XC-400i compared to xc-400?
A shopper on Jul 2, 2012
BEST ANSWER: The indoor version has a cord that plugs into a regular duplex outlet in your home or garage. The outdoor version is the same except that you hard wire the romex directly into the controller without a duplex outlet- avoiding the need to have a duplex outlet exposed to the weather
I have an old Hunter XC controller that I need to replace. Is the X-Core the same? And will it take 6 stations?
Dale B on Jul 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Dale, the x core timer I purchased was only a 4 station indoor one but they do have a six station option. X core is their basic residential model, this model does not have replaceable components like the pro c models do. Hence the lower price point.
All the programming options are the same on the x core, works great so far. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
how do you set sprinklers to water 3 times a day. Is it setting times for station A, B and C? Please advice, Rampur
Rampur V on Oct 6, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Turn dial to 'watering start times' and the display should show '1st' or '1' and then a time. That time is when your sprinklers will first run. Press the right arrow and it will change to a '2nd' or '2' and then say 'off'. Use the + and - buttons to change to the desired 2nd start time. Repeat and set 3rd start time. The A B C functions are for more like say you had flower beds you wanted to water everyday but you only want to water you yard 3 days a week. You would put the stations for your yard on A and the flower beds on B and set them individually based on how much you want to water. Hope this helps!
I am replacing an old SRC Hunter 600i. Can I replace it with a XC-400i since we only have 2 stations, without any problems, or should I use an XC0600i?
Also what years are programmed in this controller as the years in our old one ran out in 2001? and it is really hard to match the current year days of the week, with an old year.
A shopper on Jun 13, 2013
BEST ANSWER: The one and only possible incompatibility is with a wired rain detector that does connect directly to the controller. The SRC only needed a single incoming rain detector wire, because the other was shared with the common. Newer controllers require two separate incoming rain detector wires, so that means a few systems out there that have no spare conductors in the control cable, have to wire the rain detector differently.

All this means, is that the worst-case scenario is easily overcome by adding a separate bypass switch to the new controller install (or by running some two-conductor wire to the rain detector, so it communicates directly with the new controller)

As for years, not to worry. Yes, the original SRC ran out of calendar in 2011 (there is a neat workaround) but Hunter wised up, and new electronics have so much more storage space than the originals - even the final run SRC controllers had a calendar to 2045
