Features & Benefits

WaterSense Smart Watering Controller By Adding Solar Sync

By adding a Solar Sync to your Hunter controller, it transforms into a smart controller using local weather conditions to tailor watering schedules to actual conditions on the site. A Hunter controller with Solar Sync has been independently proven to have a detailed list of water-saving features and has been approved by the EPA as a WaterSense Smart Watering Controller.

Easy Retrieve Memory

A manual back-up utility that stores complete controller scheduling and setup information in back-up memory. This allows the saved watering schedule to be restored at any time. This can be used to set a controller back to its initial settings after tampering or at the beginning of a new season.

Programmable Rain Delay

The Programmable Rain Delay feature incorporates a user-specified number of days to keep the controller in the OFF mode, then allows for the system to automatically revert back to scheduled irrigation. This will prevent watering during an extended period of inclement weather, but will resume watering automatically without requiring a return visit to the controller. The controller displays the number of days remaining before watering resumes.

Quick Check

The QuickCheck feature makes field wiring issues easy to assess with the push of a button. QuickCheck displays an ERR message when a field wiring short is detected on a particular station number.

Non-Volatile Memory

This feature offers protection against unreliable power, retaining current time, date, and program data.

Automatic Short Circuit Protection

Automatic short circuit protection is a feature found in all Hunter AC powered controllers. This feature automatically detects electrical faults, which are typically caused by wiring issues. Only affected stations are skipped, allowing all other stations to water normally as programmed. There are no fuses to blow or internal circuit breakers to trip, so complete irrigation system shutdown is avoided.

Seasonal Adjustment: Global or Automatic Updates with Solar Sync

This feature allows for quick adjustments to irrigation run times through a percentage scale. During peak season, set the seasonal adjustment to 100%. If weather conditions require less water, enter the appropriate percentage value (i.e. 50%) to cut down irrigation run times without the need to adjust each station in the program. This model offers two different ways to use Seasonal Adjustment to reduce water usage: Global and Daily.

Global: The Global option provides a Seasonal Adjustment percentage to all station Run Times on all of the controller's Programs.

Daily: With the addition of a Solar Sync ET Sensor, the controller has the ability to automatically implement daily adjustments based on measured local weather.

Delay Between Stations

Users can program a delay between stations as the controller advances from one station to the next. This delay can range from a few seconds (to permit slow-closing valves additional time to close) to a much longer period of time (to allow pressure tanks time to recharge), based on user requirements.

Sensor Programmability

The ability to specify which program will be shut down in response to a specific sensor alarm. This allows programs unaffected by the sensor to continue automatic operations.

Hunter 8 zone sprinkler
I replaced an old identical Hunter timer with this new one. I was pleased that it arrived so quickly since the old timer died, and it was over 100 degrees in Austin, TX! The item was well packaged and arrived on the day that Sprinkler Warehouse indicated. We were able to install and program the new timer in about 15 minutes.

Great replacement timer
Works great, easy to install. Perfect replacement for my old unit which wasn't communicating with my rain sensor anymore. Much smaller, and easier to program too.

Great controller - would buy again
Bought this to replace a poor-quality unit installed by our irrigation contractor. We have six zones and wiring it in was a piece of cake. Pluses for us are the readable display, expandability, reliability, and ease of use.

Twenty bucks cheaper that store price
This is just what I needed to replace my worn Rain Bird controller. This unit was $20 cheaper than store here and no sales tax. It has all the features I need and costs $25 or so less that Rain Bird model. What's not to like?

Service, Support and delivery Excellent
Replaced an older model Hunter SRC controller. Spent hours checking and searching for answers why the system was not responding to the new controller. Spent about a 1/2 hour with Tech support at Hunter. They said the SRC controller used the white wire from the rain sensor on the "C" connection, not the black wire that was hooked up to the "C" on the old unit. It was a unique problem just for that controller. Switched the wires and it now works perfectly!! Great unit.

Very good service on a very good product.
The unit arrived fast, and was very easy to install. It only took about ten minutes from start to finish. I highly recommend Sprinkler Warehouse and this product. The price was reasonable also after checking around.

BEST ANSWER: A common mistake customers make is they confuse the start time and run time settings. There should only be 1 start time if you only want to run the clock once per day and (1 per program Hunter has a,b and c programs) if you are just running 1 program, ensure all of your settings are on program "a" only... and all other settings are off for programs "b" and "c" after you have set your 1 start time in program a, now set your zone run times for each zone you have. If you have 8 zones for your XC800I you will have 8 zone run times.
does this unit include the transformer?
A shopper on Feb 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the indoor model has the transformer at the plug in, its huge and usually will take up the whole wall socket.
i have an old rain bird seven station timer (rc 7a) that was installed in 1983...yes its old but it was working until the other day. none of the stations will activate so i assume its the controller/timer. any suggestions/help is appreciated. will it be easy to swap it out with this xc 800?
chad b on Jun 24, 2013
BEST ANSWER: The swap out was not hard. First I took a picture of the current wiring. Then I removed the old box. I Then connected the correct colored wires to the proper station markers.

All Worked well.

But before you do that ... verify that your main water control solenoid is turning on, and water is running through it. Try to turn it on manually before changing the sprinkler timer. You should be able to turn on a station by hand.
how difficult is it to install and what is required? I need to replace a previously installed hunter timer that only does watering 2 times a day.
Joseph D on Apr 28, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It is very simple. First I removed the Transformer from the outlet. Then I took a picture of the existing malfunctioning control unit wire connections. I then removed the wires from the zone screws. I removed the old unit and discarded it. I then locatd the new unit and installed the mounting screws inserts in the sheet rock and mounted the new Hunter to the wall. Once secure I used to picture to reconnect each wire to the appropriate zone, followed by attaching the Transformer wires and then simply pluged it in.

The manual tells you how to simply program the unit. Once set up turn the knob to the 12:00 position and your in business.

Woks great. Very pleased. Hope this helps.
Can you hard wire the indoor unit? My old timer was hardwired so the power is there.
A shopper on Aug 22, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Generally speaking the wiring to these units is the same. There would be 2 wires for each station and you simply put each old wire to the corresponding terminal on the new Hunter unit. I am not to handy of a guy but was able to do it myself in less than 30 minutes. It's been a while but it's pretty simple. As long as there are wires going to the old unit they are easily put in the new one! Does that answer your question?
does this unit have the capability to water manual all stations or is it just manual one station. When I want to manually add an extra water cycle, does this have a manual all stations that will water all zones and default back to the presets when done?
A shopper on May 16, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Sort of...you can press and hold the round PGM button (to the right of the left-right-plus-minus buttons on the top right of the unit) for several seconds which will display station #1 with a time of 0:00. You can use the +/- buttons to adjust the time from 1 to 15 minutes and it will "test" the entire system. This is roughly equivalent to running your entire system once, although every statioin will have the same duration instead of whatever is set individually.
Will this unit work with 7 zones?
Victor K on Apr 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes. It has 8 spots for 8 zones but you can use it from 1 to 8 zones.
Is this hardwire?
A shopper on Oct 14, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this unit is hardwired to the sprinkler controls. It is not wireless. My house came pre-wired. You can run two four wire or one eight wire if you can find it, if you plan to use all eight stations.
Mine are in the attic and down the wall. You can use conduit on the outside wall which would be easier.
I have a Hunter X-core 8 station sprinkler system, can i run two stations/terminals at the same time?
Chanel R on Jul 15, 2014
BEST ANSWER: To my knowledge no. Unless you permanently wire both stations to the same zone, which I done on mine. Both are flowerbed stations and combined are well below the capacity of my pump system. The controller will always operate two, and sometimes three solenoids depending on make/model of the solenoids dependably.
Hello, I am looking for a new controller to replace an irritol total control 9 zone unit from ages ago. I have 8 zones wired and was wondering about brands and reliability. I am between this controller and the raid bird ESP-RZX8i. Any thoughts or recommendations?
A shopper on Apr 22, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I can't speak to the Rain Bird but I replaced a much older style Rain Bird with the Hunter and added the wireless external rain/temperature sensor. The Hunter has performed without a flaw since I installed it last year. The only complaint I have is the inability to run more than 1 station at a time on manual.
The previous Rain Bird functioned perfectly over the years but I needed additional stations for additions to the sprinkler system. The old Rain Bird was a mechanical system and was still functioning when I replaced it with the Hunter.
I would recommend using the Hunter online programming link to program your Hunter sprinkler timer. You can find the link at the Hunter website.
Our city is limiting watering to once every two weeks. Is this possible with this controller?
A shopper on Oct 30, 2013
BEST ANSWER: manual says you can "select the number of days between watering days (from 1 to 31 days)." This is called interval watering. So it sounds possible to specify a 14 day interval.
If I have the volume & the pressure can I run 2 systems on one circuit?
mike k on Jul 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have never tried this, but I can't think of any reason you could not. It is a low voltage system, so putting two zones on the same station should have no effect. I have always had the opposite problem of not enough pressure until I got a new well installed last fall. I may try this myself with a couple zones that have too high a pressure level.
what would be the next hunter controller from the xc800i?
A shopper on Jun 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It would depend on what you are looking for. Hunter considers the XC800i an entry level model. I own an xc 800 8 station and an xc800 i . In all honesty I would point you to an Orbit 8 station instead as it has better controls, more features and a better external weather module while having all the features of the Hunter. My main issue with the Hunter XC is 1.) you cannot do a water all zones in one go as you can with the Orbit, 2.) programming on the Hunter is more complex for the same features than the ORBIT 3.) Hunter with the wireless weather sensor which I have has no logic or control to over ride the condition where: watering is scheduled every 21 days, on the 20th day it rains for 14 hours, and on the Hunter blindly goes ahead and waters fully on the next (21st day) Its remote sensor employs a cork with no logic to note how long it just rained, so your only control is to manually turn the xc off until the soil needs rain.Orbit has a remote sensor that is different that delays watering again based on heavy rain. If you really want a Hunter, use a soil rain sensor not a remote weather sensor.

I have a hunter x core to control my sprinkler system, now my question is : I had the system to work for 15 minutes a cycle ( I have 4 cycles on my lawn ) but after I set it up for 15 minutes , the control takes a 4 hour cycle , how can I fix it , I did try the 3 ( A,B,C ) programs and everyone of them takes up the 4 hour cycle , is there any body that can help me solve this problem ?
Jorge R on Sep 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: So when you say 4 cycles á 15 minutes you really men 1h combined watering time correct? To get this you either put in 4 different starting times (think you only can have 3/day/program, so you need to use both A and B program) and run them each 15 minutes. Or you can put in 1h of total time and then you use the cycle and soak funktion, you then say 1h total, 15min cycle and maybe 15-30min soak.
Good luck!
I have Hunter SRC 600I controller that needs to be replaced. This model is no longer in production. Which compatible Hunter model can I replaced it with?
Everton B on Aug 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: If you have 8 or fewer stations (zones), the XC-800i will be almost exactly like your old controller. The only differences you'll notice are newer, smarter features allowing for seasonal adjustments and things, but at minimum, it can do everything your old controller can do. To switch out the controller, disconnect the power and unscrew each of the wires from the terminal of the old controller. As you do this, I would reccomend labeling each wire with the letter or number of the terminal it came from (1, 2, R, etc.) as this will help you match the correct wires up to the new terminals of the new controller. That's all there is to it!
power outage at the house and now timer is not working ?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It could be many things. Can not really give you a correct answer without looking at it. Is the display reading anything? If so maybe the program got reset if no battery in it or there should be a reset on the inside. Maybe a breaker got tripped in the panel. Is it on a gfi outlet like in the bathroom? Maybe that tripped.

What can be done to avoid electrical problems for the controller. This is my third issue with lightening strikes apparently doing damage to the controller. Will a surge protector stop tjos?
wayne c on Jun 14, 2013
BEST ANSWER: a surge protector will help a lot but to protect all your other appliances, I suggest you get a whole home surge protector installed in your house. You can do it yourself if you have some electricity know how but suggest have an electrician install one for you if your house is prone to lightening strikes.
I have this unit but don't have the manual and need help to set up the timer. Can you tell me how to set the timer? I am a renter of the property.
Rosi d on May 4, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Rosi...This has been a very good controller. I also paired it with the auto sensor for great day to day adjustment to water delivery.
Now, Manual set-up. There are too many options to go into here. Just go to the Hunter web site and go to support. The manual is there for you to either print or get just the information that you need.
Hope this answers your question to your satisfaction.

Do you guys have a video on how to install this?
Charles K on Aug 9, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Installing this controller no problem using the manual, however it would be nice for Hunter to supply a video showing how to program all of it's features. The manual is at best poor for the first time user, lacking good information on the features & set-up. Best of luck.
I have this in the outdoor unit . The sprinkler company came to turn on system. They told me too many heads were bad so they left the system off. I have replaced the heads and gasket kits on the Hunter heads in the past. The issue is when I try to turn the system the first number on the display does not show all the way and does not change it just shows a 1 and a partial 7 when I try to change station # or time etc. Is the display bad, or did they do something that won't allow me to turn it on ?
Alex K on May 20, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Try removing the backup battery and shut off power to the clock. It may re set once you power it back up.
