King Innovation 22163 1/2" in. MPT Lateral and Main Line Pipe Drain

During cold periods, water in your sprinkler system can be your worst enemy. Most experts recommend the addition of drains where freezing may affect the soil more than one foot deep. Along with winterization, strategically-placed drains insure against damage to your investment.King Drains are designed to exceed the working pressures of all lateral or main line installations. Fittings mount under sprinkler heads preventing freeze damage and low sprinkler head overflow. Valve protectors are engineered for installation adjacent to sensitive solenoid valves to prevent costly freeze cracking in the housing.

  • Soft grip ergonomic design combines main and lateral line drains
  • For use on sprinkler heads, valves and fittings
  • Complements end-of-season blow-outs

Self-cleaning Dirt Arrestor Screen

  • The raised screen prevents clogging of drain due to sediment and/or contaminants.

Patented Pressure Sensitive Valve

  • Releases water slowly at root level

Patented Backflow Check

  • Eliminates potential freeze damage and backflow contamination by preventing water from re-entering system

D. Ergonomic Design with Non-Corrosive Housing

  • Soft Grip ergonomic design provides easy and comfortable installation. Grip allows for better torque, and reduces hand fatigue and pain. The non-corrosive housing is injection molded with high impact polymer to ensure lifetime protection.

Broad Dispersing Pad

  • Keeps roots and soil from penetrating, minimizing the need for sumps

Installation Instructions

Install all "screw-in" King Drains on 45-degree angle to ensure proper drainage of water from pipes. All King Drains can be installed with or without a gravel sump. For small diameter shorter lines a sump is not necessary. Larger and longer lines will drain more efficiently with a gravel sump. For elevation changes greater than 15 feet, install one King Drain at each 15-foot interval.

Must have for every system
My clients can rest easy over the winter and never have to worry about a pipe in their irrigation systems bursting due to these little wonders. We install them in every in ground system and have never had any problems with winterizing systems.

This Nozzle indicates that it has coverage close to the sprinkler head, typically their is always a area under the spray pattern that gets significantly less water.

I have 1" PVC. What drain should I get for this size line?
Brian H on Mar 19, 2017
Do I need to add thread paste or tape to the drain threads before installing into tee?
Doug H on Mar 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I always add tape to drains that are installed on main lines, basically any drain that has constant pressure. On lateral lines I don't care if they leak a little through the threads.
Will the King drain plug if used with unfiltered irrigation pond water?
James O on Jul 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would imagine so. If debris needs to be removed from mist head filters, that same debris would clog the fabric-like drain
How does this darin Plug work?
Hartmut S on Oct 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It is a drain. It has a spring in the drain when the line pressures up it closes the drain when the water is turned off the drain opens up and drains the line. It eliminates the need to blow out irrigation lines for winter to prevent freezing. You install in in lines with a combo tee Male barbs in the line and it screws into the FPT. Hope this helps. Should this have some gravel surrounding it as well to prevent dirt from packing against it? If I am unsure of my lowest point would it be reasonable to dig a little deeper and run a foot of 1/2" before attaching? Thank you.
A shopper on Feb 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, putting some gravel around it is recommended. However, I don't think it would help to run a foot of pipe before attaching it. The ability of water to flow through the drain and empty the pipe will be determined by whether or not the drain is attached at the lowest point of that run. Extending the drain a foot lower won't help it drain any more water if its not at the lowest point on the run...
Does this reduce flow or pressure?
A shopper on Feb 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The valve is positioned at the low part of the line, whether that be in the middle with a tee or at the end, and closes almost instantly when the water is turned on. From that point, it has absolutely NO effect on flow or pressure, provided it's not defective and not sealing properly.
Do you sell King drain products? I need a few King Model 17145 drains.
