Funny Pipe & Swing Joints

Aside from the fact that the two types of pipe are made from entirely different material, they also have slightly different advantages. Funny pipe is much more flexible, making it easier to install around obstacles or uneven terrain. It also resists cracking and is less likely to be damaged by impacts. PVC is more rigid and is often used for main irrigation lines.

Swing joints do not significantly reduce water pressure. They may cause a very small pressure loss because water flows through additional fittings and bends, but in most irrigation systems, this drop is negligible. When properly installed, swing joints mainly provide flexibility and protection for sprinkler heads without noticeably affecting system performance.

Swing joints can be used with most types of sprinkler heads, including spray heads and rotor heads. However, the swing joint must be properly sized and rated for the sprinkler’s flow and pressure, especially for larger rotor or high-flow heads. If you are using high-flow or large commercial rotors, a standard ½-inch funny pipe might restrict the water flow too much.

One of the benefits of funny pipes & fittings is that no special tools are required. Funny pipe is installed using barbed fittings that can be pushed into the pipe by hand. In some cases, a pair of pliers may help with tight connections, but otherwise, you won’t need to purchase any other equipment.
