Ball Valves

To install an irrigation ball valve, start by deciding where it will be installed. Then cut the pipe and attach the ball valve using threaded, glued, or compression fittings, depending on the pipe material. Ball valves can be installed in either orientation but make sure the valve handle is accessible for easy operation.

Start by tightening any threaded fittings or compression nuts around the valve. If the leak is coming from the handle, try tightening the packing nut just below it. For persistent leaks, the internal seals may be worn, and the valve will need to be replaced, as most irrigation ball valves aren’t designed to be repaired and rebuilt.

Ball valves generally do not reduce water pressure when they’re fully open. However, if the valve is partially closed, it will restrict flow and reduce pressure downstream. Low-quality or undersized ball valves can also create minor pressure loss, so choosing the correct size and a full-port design is important for optimal irrigation performance.

Ball valves are available in materials compatible with various pipes, including PVC and brass. Be sure to select a valve that matches your pipe material and size.
