Flexible Couplings FAQs

What is a Schedule 40 PVC flexible coupling?

A Sch. 40 PVC flexible coupling is a fitting that can connect two sections of PVC pipe while allowing a small amount of movement. Unlike a rigid PVC coupling, it uses a flexible rubber body secured with clamps. These couplings are useful for areas where vibration and slight shifting may occur.

What are flexible PVC couplings used for?

Flexible PVC couplings join sections of pipe while allowing for vibration. They can also be helpful when repairing damaged pipe or connecting sections that do not line up perfectly. As long as you have a coupling that matches the pipe size and material, flexible couplings will technically work for most PVC connections.

What size coupling do I need for my pipe?

Choose a coupling that matches the nominal size of your pipe. For example, 1-inch PVC pipe generally requires a 1-inch PVC coupling, while 3/4-inch poly pipe typically uses a 3/4-inch insert coupling. When in doubt, measure the pipes before trying to connect them.

Are Schedule 40 flexible couplings suitable for underground use?

Yes, many flexible couplings can be used underground. Flexible rubber couplings are commonly used for drainage and irrigation repairs, but not every model is approved for pressurized water lines. For buried sprinkler piping, make sure to test for leaks before backfilling.

Do flexible PVC couplings require primer and PVC cement?

It depends on the type of coupling. Flexible rubber couplings with stainless-steel clamps do not require primer or PVC cement, as they seal by compression when the clamps are tightened. However, some PVC fittings are designed for solvent-weld connections. Check the manufacturer’s installation instructions for more details.

Can flexible PVC couplings be reused?

Some flexible couplings can be reused, but it depends on the fitting. Rubber couplings with stainless-steel clamps are often reusable if there are no signs of damage. Solvent-weld flexible PVC couplings, however, are generally not reusable once they have been cemented in place. For most repairs, replacing a worn coupling is usually the safer choice.

Can a flexible coupling be used on sprinkler mainlines?

A flexible coupling can only be used on a sprinkler mainline if it’s rated for such. Many rubber flexible couplings are designed for lower-pressure applications and should not be used on a continuously pressurized mainline. For sprinkler mainlines, you may need to use a different coupling that matches the size and pipe material.
