model 521 A locater
I have owned a sprinkler company for over 20 years, i recommend the 521A locater, i can find any valve in a yard within minutes every time.

The only time i can't the valves quickly is if there is a wire break that end the wire run, so then I stop and dig up where I had lost signal find the wire and start again.

There is never a time i cannot locate broken wires or valves.

There are 2 ways to ground the the wire, 1 way to ground is with a probe stuck into the ground, and the 2nd way is to just ground it to the common wire in the timer clock.

That will eliminate noise as well.

Its a great tool I own 2 of them.

Great Experience
Although we have been using various models of the 521 for many years, the new model and new color are great. Purchasing from SprinklerWarehouse was very easy and the price was good.

Don't waiste your hard earned money
Not a tool i would spend the money on again. The signal can travel 100 yards away from the wire im trying to locate making it impossible to find the fault. I finally broke out my trusty meter and a shovel and fixed it the hard way.remember when buying a locater you get what you pay for. I bought this because of the Greenlee name. Big mistake

how deep will it detect wires?
A shopper on Jan 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Not sure. I have used it twice and the wires were about 8" under ground both times. Works great. I even used it to estimate the depth of a valve per the instructions and it was pretty accurate.

My husband is an electrcian. He is needing a tool that will allow him to find breaks in lines that are direct buried or in conduit or in PVC. Will the Model 521 do any or all of that?

How deep can the 521A detect?
Mike Aaron on Mar 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The deepest we trace is about 3 feet. No problems at all. Love this unit. Tom
Just the headphones how much?
A shopper on Nov 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This unit does not have headphones. The wand has a speaker built in. Not sure if SprinklerWarehouse sells the headphones for the older "521" version, but you can usually find them at Radio Shak. They are not expensive. They are mono, not stereo.
how to use it ?
A shopper on Oct 24, 2018
The biggest problem I have with this unit is tracing wires near coaxial cable, telephone lines and invisible dog fences. The signal seems to lock on to those lines even though I'm physically connected to the irrigation wire. Any ways to prevent this?
