Features & Benefits

Conserve water. Save your wallet.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as much as 70% of a home's total water use during the dry season may go to landscape irrigation. Experts estimate that more than 50% of landscape water is wasted due to overwatering.

Using seven-day forecasts, the RainMachine efficiently adjusts your watering schedule using real time temperature, wind and rainfall data. It was scientifically designed to improve watering efficiency and dramatically reduce water waste.

Easy to setup. Easy to use.

Everything is displayed on your touch screen. The RainMachine defines a new class of easy-to-use smart sprinkler controller. Forget rotary switches, and no more blinking clocks.

The RainMachine offers a virtually unlimited number of options. Its programming versatility is unprecedented: specific weekdays, even or odd days, cycle and soak, or station delay.

Garden from any Screen. Easy Connect. Easy Control.

Connect from a smart phone or tablet to control water use remotely. The application automatically discovers any RainMachines on your local network and makes them accessible through an easy-to-use secure interface.

NOAA: A weather ready nation.

RainMachine connects via Wi-Fi and downloads weather data every 6 hours. NOAA employs satellites, radars and thousands of weather stations, delivering the most accurate weather forecast on Earth.

Advanced climate modeling running on huge datacenters are free for you to use in your garden.

NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Enhanced security. Keep the password to yourself.

Do not expose your garden to the Internet. RainMachine keeps all credentials local, on your device, not on a internet server. This means you do not have to rely on a third party service to protect your garden.

Multiple Data Sources. Ultimate data stability.

The RainMachine has the ability to gather meteorological data from multiple data sources, increasing accuracy and reliability. Imagine a chorus of voices singing in unison, if one voice stops, the song will still go on. That way, your garden can rely on accurate data on which to base watering schedules.

Extreme Temperatures. Your plants are protected.

The RainMachine protects your garden against unexpected hot or freezing conditions. For example, it ceases to water if temperature goes below a preset value.

Additionally, you can suspend all programs for a number of days or months, according to your local climate.

During extremely hot days, the RainMachine will increase water output to provide your garden with the optimal amount needed to flourish.

Precision Forecast. Let it rain.

With rapidly changing weather patterns, the RainMachine never gets left behind. Updating forecast data several times a day the RainMachine delivers the most accurate EvapoTraspiration calculations.

Unlike other sprinkler controllers that use zip codes, the RainMachine uses exact street address location, downloading precise weather data in within less than 1.5 miles (2.5 km) grid. Let it rain!

Nobody else owns your Garden. Cloud independent by design.

By design, nobody else has the control of your garden. You are not tethered to a cloud service of any kind.

RainMachine connects via Wi-Fi to trusted National2 and International3 weather data sources and adjusts daily watering amount. The machine stays in sync with Nature for optimal efficiency. All this data is available free to RainMachine users.

OpenSource, the Ultimate Accountability. Code. Share. Evolve.

Because we provide our evapotranspiration formula source code and API, we make our work trusted and verifiable. User contributions from around the world will help the community and continue to evolve the product.

Good Price, Fast Service, But...
Deducting one star due to the "Sprinkler Warehouse" sticker that you put on the front of the controller. It took me 10-15 minutes of scrubbing with Goo Gone to get all of the adhesive off. I don't put stickers on stuff that you buy, why do you think I would want you to put a sticker on something that I bought?

Easy to use, best when connected to network
Easy to install with a screwdriver and following prompts on screen or using iPhone/iPad or Andriod. Connecting to and using over WiFi is very simple, over the internet is easy too but you do need to be network router savvy.

The weather forecasting is good 75% of the time, the other times it usually waters less than you expected/wanted. There are screens and app features that make it easy to check when, and how much, it watered each day, as well as how much it is likely to water the next programmed time. The weather-guessing can be turned off easily if desired.

Unlike many traditional controllers, you cannot connect more than one valve to a zone and a master valve consumes the first zone on the controller. It lacks any sensor inputs, though rain/freeze sensors can be simply installed in the common circuit.

A major benefit is the continuous improvements that are made at no additional cost -- both the controller and the app is updated automatically and, for me, has added so very nice new features since I first purchased it.

The app on a cell phone over the internet is a great remote control, especially for professionals when your customer calls for help and you are a long distance away. You can manage virtually unlimited controllers from the app over the internet.

I recommend it to all my friends...

Connectivity options are excellent
I have been using this for 2 months now, and am very impressed with the user interface - regardless if accessing via phone app, web interface, or the touchscreen. Also very nice to see a detailed log of the watering history, so you don't have to question whether or not your system ran as you though it was going to.

Exceeds expectations for a wi-fi controller. The app works well. The most recent software update added seamless integration with Amazon Echo. It is awesome saying "Alexa, turn on sprinkler zone 1".

Best Controller Ever
Works as advertised. No more running back and forth to check sprinklers and switch zones. Multi programs are a snap to set-up. Does not water much or at all if it rained good (according to forecast which is pretty accurate). Given the small wire connection cover and the mass of wires my old controller covered up, I decided to use an Orbit controller box. I mounted the Rain Machine in the box and drilled holes for the wires to come in under the cover. Real clean look with no wires visable and no issues with the wireless connection through the plastic box.

Awesome! Worth every penny
I have had this controller for 6 months now, and absolutely love it. The updated app is great, I end up checking the app regularly to see how much water I am saving. The reason I purchased this product over other similar products is that you don't have to rely fully on an app to control it, and it doesn't require any subscriptions. It appears to be based on the android operating system, and has been very reliable. It doesn't seem very waterproof so I mounted mine indoors. If you have to mount it outside, I would recommend a nice enclosure for it.

Easy to setup and install
Controls my sprinkler zones with a soak cycle to prevent overwatering. Does not have a rain sensor input, but you can use the common wire through most rain sensors to prevent watering in case of a sudden rainstorm. I would definitely recommend this product!

Saving me lots of water.
Saving me lots of water. Even have my weather station posting to Weather Underground, which my RainMachine uses to fine tune watering needs. Love it.

Easy set-up
This unit is much easier to program than other reviews claim. It was very easy to adjust using my cell phone during set -up. I was able to avoid constantly running back to the garage to change zones. My only negative is that the unit does not hide the zone controller wires very well.

Can you do a master valve with this unit?
Sprinkler God on Jul 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. You would use Zone 1 to connect your pump relay (as master valve). Zone 1 will get triggered along with any other one of the 11 zones (Zones 2 to 12). It will start the pump at the same time as any single zone is triggered.

To answer the original question, No. You cannot run two Zones at the same time, expect in the case described above, when Zone 1 is configured as Master Valve, instead of a irrigation zone. So, only one irrigation area (zone) at the time.

how can I use it outdoor?
A shopper on Jul 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I use my smart phone connected to my wireless network to activate and monitor the RainMachine via the app. It is easy and simple to use. However, you need to ensure that you can access your wireless network around your yard.
I was at first hesitate with using the app on my smart phone but once the app was downloaded and configured to the RainMachine, I was able to create programs, schedule watering cycles and view watering history without going to the unit.
I need to turn on a well pump along with any valve opening. Can I program an unused Zone (Zone 8) to cycle ON along with any other Zone and connect Zone 8 to a Pump Relay Control? (Can two Zones be operated simultaneously?)
Clint G on Jul 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Only zone 1 can be set to act as the pump relay and is active when any zone is operated just like say a Toro. Only one Zone can be operated at a time. Usually design is for one zone anyway. You can add multiple programs easily to cover other zones at different times but they will not overlap or run simo..
rain sensor connects to this?
A shopper on Jan 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: yes but you need to follow a certain wiring diagram because for the 12 zone and 16 zone models there are no ports to connect the rain sensor (only the 8-zone model has one). To connect the rain sensor to the 12-zone or 16-zone model of this rain machine you need to connect the two ports of the rain sensor in series with the neutral (or common) wire of the rain machine. Basically the common wire from all zones connect to one port of the rain sensor and then the other port of the rain sensor connects to the "C" terminal inside the rain machine. You can find this diagram on the RainMachine support website and it shows you exactly how to do this connection. I used it and it works fine
do i need special valves for this?
brody J on May 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No special valves. I just replaced my original Hunter controller with this unit, and it was very easy to setup and get working. The only thing that was a little confusing was that the instruction implied that you could only operate 6 valves with one common, but that's not the case. I had a 9-zone system with one common wire, and that works fine. You can use the one common terminal and operate all 12 zones.
Is this controller the first or second generation?
Mark G on Jul 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 4TH generation. Its great grandfather was an oak bucket from Ireland where he raised his family watering in the fields until the great potato famine, whereupon he pinned a 5pound note to his oldest son's lapel and sent him to America to make his fortune.
Does this controller have an Ethernet port?
Hans B on Jul 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It only has WiFi.

However, you may be able to add a USB ethernet adapter. Since this site will not allow posting of links, search "rainmachine hd-12 ethernet" and you will find support pages for this device that explain the caveats with this approach.
Possible to program two separate schedules? Can I program Day 1 for 6 zones and Day 3 for 5 other zones? Then Day 6 back to the first 5 zones, etc.? Can't do all 12 zones on the same day - would mean about 11 hours of watering on the same day - local code violation. Thanks!
Sanford on Mar 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The programming is very flexible. You can create as many different programs as you want. I have one for flowers a few minutes every morning. Another for flowers in late afternoon. Another for yard zones. Basic answer is yes. Super easy from iPhone. Can be programmed from the base unit, but designed for app. I can also start and stop any zone at any time from my app. If I'm on vacation and dad calls and says flowers look dry I can run it from anywhere I have wifi. You can set exact water times, or you can let the unit adjust based on weather conditions. It logs itself into NOAA weather for your zip code.
How many zones can be run at the same time?
A shopper on Jun 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can only operate one zone (valve) at a time - which is typical of controllers. Sprinkler systems are designed where one zone has an output properly sized for each irrigation area. You can have multiple programs so you can water selected zones at different times or certain ones more frequently. I have not tried connecting more than one zone valve wiring to one controller zone but that may be possible - if your pump can handle the volume.
Can you manipulate all 12 zones individually to water multiple times throughout the day and down to the minutes and seconds?
A shopper on Oct 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You can add multiple programs that define when each zone should be turned on. Each zone can be referenced in multiple programs to allow watering multiple times during the day. You set the start time on each program to the minute; you cannot set to the second.
Does this controller allow for pump control and does it allow you to turn pump on/off for certain zones (such as gravity backflushing a filter zone with pump off)?
A shopper on Jun 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello. Unfortunately I cannot answer that question as I don't have pumps or backflushing in my system. I can say that (so far) I am very glad we purchased this controller. The interface is straight-forward and easy to use. I like that it has a touch screen, and it was very easy to setup. Also, I e-mailed their tech-support a question and received a human reply with an accurate answer in one day. Overall, a good experience!

Hunter Bundle PCC600-WSSSEN
BEST ANSWER: All Controllers are capable of this feature. The Smart weather based controllers are no different. You simply set up 2 different programs. program A for station 1&2 and program B for stations 3&4. The controller will adjust each individual program accordingly based on available NOAA weather data. Another advantage of the Rain Machine is the ability to control from your art phone or tablet.

what year product is this?
A shopper on May 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I bought mine in 2016. Great controller. Saves water by monitoring the weather conditions and adjusting the watering times. You can also control the system using the app on your smart phone - great when you are working on the systm and need to turn on a zone.
Is there a month charge to use the app?
Mary M on Jul 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not that I've experienced. The reason I chose the rain machine was its open source software and non-proprietary system. I didn't want a membership or a monthly use fee or the risk of them going out of business and being stuck with a device that wouldn't fully work.
Very happy with my rain machine.
Do you need an additional rain sensor?
A shopper on Jun 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no need for a rain sensor. The rainmachine uses weather forecasts from Internet based weather sites to adjust watering as required. This week we had a huge rainstorm on Sunday. It turned off and moderated my sprinkler programming for the next few days based on algorithms taking the rainfall into account. Much more useful than mechanical rain sensors.

does this unit need to linked to computer, tablet, ETC to run or is that just for programming?
IE, when I leave for extended periods of time like 2 or 3 weeks will it keep running. Unit will have wifi link.
Mark H on May 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It can be programmed from the unit itself or wifi connected device (on same wifi network) including android, iphone/ipad, or computer (either mac or pc) or all of the above. Unit runs independently with or without wifi, but connecting to wifi allows programming and evaluating all functions, watering times, actual watering, etc even more thoroughly than from comprehensive LCD panel on unit. it also allows monitoring and scheduling / programming / running from any internet connection in world if rainmachine website set up and unit(s) registered through web site (easy to do). I found it so useful i bought a second one for backyard and can access both through same ipad and android phone app and home and laptop computer, all at home and all away from home network. also connected to amazon echo so can run programs / zones by voice from the echo. love them!
Can the screen be locked for limited access? I have some neighbor children who like to press the buttons and I end up reprograming my existing unit constantly.

BEST ANSWER: So many things I could say about unruly children vandals but suffice it to say put it in an Orbit box with a lock and control it with your phone or PC.
What are the timing increments...? For example, can i set it to operate 3 minutes and 18 seconds?
A shopper on Jun 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The zone times are adjusted in seconds.
I also need to find out if this can be used with a pump control?
whynot on Jun 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Just run your low voltage wire from your pump start relay to Zone 1 on your controller. Then set Zone 1 as the Master Valve. (Only Zone 1 can be used as the Master Valve) Once Zone 1 is configured as the master valve it will turn on the pump whenever another zone is activated.
Is this already made or is this ad that helps people keep track of there water sprinklers and a reminder of what they need to do when they are sleep or If they forget ?
Demarja J on Nov 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This device would replace an existing sprinkler controller or for new sprinkler installs. Once you get it connected to your WiFi you have full control over schedules or manual turning on and off from your mobile phone or the touch screen. It will send you messages saying water zone x started if you like The intergrated weather prevents it from turning on while it raining or will cut down the amount of watering if it does not rain enough. I love mine. Highly recommend it for sprinkler irrigation systems. I had an older basic controller. I was able to install this without any additional parts or changes.
can I add stations to this unit?
A shopper on May 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, though the developers did have plans to do so a couple of years ago. You can add an additional unit if you use a relay that isolates the common wire from the first controller when the second one is operating.
