The charge on a battery-operated controller can last for up to 2 years, depending on usage and battery quality. Some units use AA or 9V batteries, though some support rechargeable options. Note that frequent watering schedules, longer run times, or colder weather can shorten battery life. Just to be safe, it’s a good idea to replace batteries at the start of each irrigation season.

Some battery-operated irrigation controllers support rain and soil sensors, but not all models. Higher-end units often have dedicated sensor terminals or wireless compatibility, allowing them to pause watering when soil moisture is sufficient. However, plenty of basic valve-mounted controllers operate independently without sensor input.
