Funny Pipe & Swing Joints

Aside from the fact that the two types of pipe are made from entirely different materials, they also have slightly different advantages. Funny pipe is much more flexible, making it easier to install around obstacles or uneven terrain. It also resists cracking and is less likely to be damaged by impacts. PVC is more rigid and is often used for main irrigation lines.

Swing joints do not significantly reduce water pressure. They may cause a very small pressure loss because water flows through additional fittings and bends, but in most irrigation systems, this drop is negligible. When properly installed, swing joints mainly provide flexibility and protection for sprinkler heads without noticeably affecting system performance.

Swing joints can be used with most types of sprinkler heads, including spray heads and rotor heads. However, the swing joint must be properly sized and rated for the sprinkler’s flow and pressure, especially for larger rotor or high-flow heads. If you are using high-flow or large commercial rotors, a standard ½-inch funny pipe might restrict the water flow too much.

Funny pipe typically uses barbed insert fittings, such as barbed elbows, couplings, tees, and adapters. The most common setup is a barbed elbow connecting the funny pipe to a sprinkler head, with another barbed adapter connecting to the lateral irrigation line. Most of these fittings are pushed directly into the tubing by hand.

Yes. Funny pipe can be buried and is commonly used as flexible swing pipe between the sprinkler lateral line and the sprinkler head. Just remember to avoid sharp bends that could kink the tubing while it's buried. Funny pipe is best for short lengths to sprinkler heads, not as a replacement for long sections of PVC.

One of the benefits of funny pipes & fittings is that no special tools are required. Funny pipe is installed using barbed fittings that can be pushed into the pipe by hand. In some cases, a pair of pliers may help with tight connections, but otherwise, you won’t need to purchase any other equipment.
