Only underground sprinkler systems that include automatic timers require wire from the controller to the valves. The wires make it possible to start and stop the sprinkler system remotely on a predetermined schedule.
During installation electrical wire is run from the controller to each control valve. 16 gauge wire allows for the user to easily create a pig-tail coil that helps minimize electrical surges that can occur during lightening storms; providing an additional layer of protection to your solenoids.

Red wire is used for the hot (positive) wire to each valve. One red wire per zone is run from the controller to each valve. You will end up with the same number of red wires as you have valves in your system.
White wire is used for the ground (common) wire for the valves. A single white wire is run from the controller to the closest valve and then continues to each valve. You will end up with one white wire connecting the valves to the controller.
